A Brief History
On February 24th, 1895, at the close of a three and one half weeks' meeting conducted by minister C.E. Pile of Bethany,Nebraska, the Chruch of Christ was organized in Ord, Nebraska with 76 charter members. The church quickly grew to a membership of 227 in 1913.
For a time the congregation met where it could find room. In 1896 the church was offered the use of the assembly room in the Court House for $2 a month rent. The first baptistry of the early congregation was a stock tank placed in a yard and filled from a hydrant.
On March 6,1898, a lot (the southwest corner of the present 16th and O street intersection) was purchased from Mrs. Maggie Curie for the sum of $275, and plans were started for the erection of a frame building 30 feet by 50 feet ,which was erected and dedicated during the summer. No record can be found concerning the cost of the original building, but a portion of the cost, $400, was borrowed from a church extension fund, payable in five yearly payments. In 1909, the building was extensively remodeled; it was raised, enlarged, and a basement was put in, at a cost of $1300.
Like many churches, there were ups and downs. We have no records of any pastors from 1902-1906, except for a short time in 1903. For 4 years in the 1930's there was no minister and a faithful few kept the doors open with determination and faith.
A new era of Ord Christian Church began in 1977 when a building committee was formed. Serving on the building committee were Charles Hackel, George Cetak, and Wayne Clamp. Darleen Severance was added in 1980.
In 1980 we purchased land on the north edge of town on Highway 11. On August 22, 1982, the final plans of the new church building, designed by Goodman church builders, were approved. Our first Sunday worship service was held on December 4th. Dedication Sunday was on April 29th, 1984.
This church began in 1895 by people with vision; men and women with vision built this present facility, and have purchased the lot immediately to the north of the present building for future expansion. But the church is not the building. The Church is people, young and old, who fill its pews each Sunday. They are filled with the vision of continued growth, not for the sake of numbers, but for the expansion of the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
